Bacalao Performance Company

Bacalao Performance Company was established in London in January 2011 by Portuguese performer Sofia Marques and Norwegian director Marianne Lorentzen McGill. Bacalao is an international theatre and performance company, with an interdisciplinary and intercultural focus and interest that brings its work to new places and meeting points, geographically, socially and artistically.

Bacalao the fish dish however, has been around for much longer, at least 500 years. It brings people together around dinner tables on all the different continents, mixing local, national and international influences.

This is what Bacalao Performance Company does as well: mixing local and international forms, and bringing people together (literally and metaphorically) "around dinner tables". Through personal performances in intimate spaces we create meetings that give people a chance to communicate, share and reflect on the big and small emotions, experiences and questions of life. These meetings do not emphasise the distinction between artists and audience members, on the contrary they are focused on an aspect of integration. Ultimately we’re all fish in the same sea.

In August 2012 Bacalao is setting up a base in Oslo, Norway, continuing its projects and prospects there and internationally. We'll go where the current takes us...
